10 Natural Zero Waste Deodorants for Sensitive Skin

Natural Sustainable Deodorant for Sensitive Skin

In this post I will list out 10 natural deodorants that are suitable for sensitive skin. All deodorant's featured are cruelty-free, vegan, baking soda free, plastic free, aluminum free, have mild or no fragrance and they are all from independently owned brands.

What is Natural Deodorant?

Natural deodorant generally refers to deodorant that does not contain aluminum, it would be more accurate to describe it as simple aluminum free deodorant. There's a lot of fear mongering around aluminum, but deodorants with aluminum is actually perfectly safe to use. In fact aluminum acts as an effective antiperspirant, meaning that it makes you sweat less. Deodorants meanwhile do not make you sweat less, instead their job is to make sure that you don't stink. Which you can even get just from the name de-odorant.

Why use Natural Deodorant?

If deodorant with aluminum is safe and effective, why would you want to use natural, or aluminum free, deodorant? While everyone has their own reasons, one good one is that aluminum in deodorants can cause yellow pit stains. This is due to a chemical reaction between the aluminum and your sweat. These stains can be very difficult to remove. This is actually why I personally switched to natural deodorant some years ago and I've never seen a yellow pit stain on my clothes since!

Is Natural Deodorant more Sustainable?

Natural deodorant is not inherently more sustainable than non natural deodorant. However, natural deodorants are a lot more often packaged sustainably. When it comes to natural deodorants there are tons of completely plastic free options. Out of the 840 Aluminum Free deodorant's in my database 56% of them have completely plastic free packaging. 82% of the plastic free deodorants are in biodegradable paper packaging. I have actually not found a single plastic free deodorant that does have aluminum, which honestly feels like a gap in the market.

Does Natural Deodorant Work for Sensitive Skin?

This is something that I've personally had issues with in my Natural deodorant journey, which I talk about more in this post. One thing that you might want to avoid if you have sensitive skin is Sodium Bicarbonate, also known as baking soda. This is something that I've had a lot of issues with myself, some deodorant's with baking soda have been okay for me, usually when it's lower on the ingredient list, but I tend to avoid it.

Be Careful with Potentially Irritating Fragrances

Another common irritant is essential oils. Several essential oils are known to be potentially irritating to the skin, especially when used in high concentrations or on sensitive skin. The deodorants featured in this post are either fragrance free or use mild scents like Vanilla or Coconut.

Essential oils most likely to cause skin irritation:

  1. Cinnamon Bark Oil: Cinnamon bark oil is a potent essential oil and can be a strong skin irritant.

  2. Oregano Oil: Oregano oil is highly concentrated and contains compounds that can irritate the skin.

  3. Thyme Oil: Thyme oil is another potent essential oil that can cause skin irritation.

  4. Citronella Oil: Citronella is known for its use in insect repellents, but it can be irritating to the skin, especially in high concentrations.

  5. Clove Oil: Clove oil contains eugenol, which can be a skin irritant.

  6. Lemongrass Oil: Lemongrass oil can be irritating to the skin, particularly in higher concentrations.

  7. Peppermint Oil: Peppermint oil is a potent essential oil, and its menthol content can cause skin irritation. It should be diluted for topical use.

  8. Bergamot Oil: Bergamot oil is known for its fragrant citrus scent but can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, potentially leading to sunburn or skin discoloration when exposed to the sun.

  9. Eucalyptus Oil: Eucalyptus oil, while widely used for its respiratory benefits, can be irritating to the skin if not properly diluted.

  10. Lavender Oil (in some cases): Although lavender oil is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction in some individuals. It's important to do a patch test if you are unsure about your sensitivity to lavender oil.
